The
Douglas Development story begins with its founder, entrepreneur
Douglas Jemal. Mr. Jemal came to Washington,
D.C. in 1966 from New York and began his career in the retail
trade with a small store on 7th Street, NW. He soon
branched out into the electronics and record business, and
by the mid-1980's had created one of the most successful retail
electronics chains in the Nation.
Mr. Jemal branched into real estate in the early 1980's, purchasing
his first parcel at 425 7th Street, NW in 1981. In 1985,
Mr. Jemal formally entered the real estate business with the
formation of Douglas Development.
Since then, Douglas Development has significantly grown its
portfolio of properties and its stature in the regional
business community. From its modest beginnings with just
a few properties, Douglas Development has grown to manage
a portfolio of over 150 properties (including more than
8,000,000 square feet of commercial and residential space).
The Douglas Development portfolio currently includes retail,
office, residential, and warehouse space. |

Douglas Development has grown to become a nationally recognized
development firm with a reputation for creating value. Douglas
Development’s reputation has been established in its
ability to finance, design, deliver, and lease projects. For
example, in 1998, Douglas Development was selected by the
General Services Administration (GSA) for the acquisition,
renovation, and redevelopment of the 800 F Street Historic
Row properties in Washington, DC. After an
extensive competitive bid process, Douglas Development was
chosen over many other nationally recognized developers. GSA’s
selection criteria included development experience, past performance,
overall development concept, financial feasibility, commitment
to historic preservation, and overall best value to the government.
